Officials from the Ministry of Health and Education have moved in to help curb the worrying trend of disease outbreaks in schools.
The Health CS Susan Wafula on Wednesday visited Kakamega County which has since seen two schools shut indefinitely.
The CS together with education officials led by education PS Belio Kipsang are currently visiting the county and meeting with Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and the Regional Commissioner Samson Irungu Macharia to receive updates on the health situation in the county.
“The officials discussed recent health challenges experienced at both Mukumu Girls and Butere Boys Secondary Schools,” the ministry said in a statement.
The two schools were closed after a cholera scare early this week.
Mukumu Girls High School was shut down by public health officers following the death of two students after a diarrhoea outbreak.
The outbreak saw over 124 students hospitalised at the Kakamega County General Hospital last week in a suspected case of food and water poisoning.
Key on the agenda is to provide a joint approach to addressing the health concerns in schools and measures to be taken to ensure that the affected students receive the necessary medical attention.
Butere Boys’ High School on the other hand was closed indefinitely following a cholera scare.
All students were sent home after 100 students complained of stomach irritation that led to diarrhoea.
