Dr. Nancy Macharia, Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has commenced a one-month terminal leave ahead of her official retirement on June 30, 2025.
In her absence, Evaleen Mitei has been appointed as the acting CEO on an interim basis as the commission begins the process of selecting a permanent successor.
In an internal memo dated June 1, Dr. Macharia expressed appreciation to the TSC fraternity for their unwavering support throughout her time in office.
“I begin my terminal leave today, June 1, 2025, in preparation for my retirement from the Teachers Service Commission on June 30, 2025,” she wrote.
Her departure marks the end of a notable era at TSC, following a decade of service during which she led several reforms and played a transformative role in Kenya’s education sector since assuming office in 2015, succeeding Gabriel Lengoiboni.
Despite navigating a range of complex and often contentious issues, Dr. Macharia noted with pride the progress achieved under her leadership.
“We’ve managed to overcome numerous hurdles and reach key milestones in transforming the teaching profession and improving service delivery to our stakeholders,” she said.
She encouraged teachers and staff nationwide to extend the same level of support to her successor, the management, and the Commission’s board, to ensure continued progress.
“I trust you will offer the same commitment and cooperation to my successor and the leadership team as you did during my tenure,” she urged.
As she steps into a new chapter in her professional journey, Dr. Macharia conveyed her deep gratitude for the collaborative accomplishments made during her leadership.
“As I embark on the next phase of my career, I’ve been reflecting on the strong foundation we’ve built together. I leave with immense gratitude for everything we have achieved as a team,” she concluded.
